General Care & Cleaning

Our hand-rubbed oil and wax finish is designed to be durable and easy to maintain. It protects the wood while allowing it to breathe and show its natural beauty.

  • Regular Dusting: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth (like microfiber) to dust surfaces regularly. Avoid using feather dusters, which can sometimes scratch fine finishes.
  • Cleaning Spills: For spills, immediately wipe the surface with a lightly dampened cloth, then dry with a clean, soft cloth. Do not allow liquids to sit on the surface for extended periods.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use all-purpose cleaners, ammonia-based products, silicone-based waxes, or abrasive cleaners on your furniture. These can strip the finish and damage the wood. A simple cloth dampened with water is sufficient for most cleaning needs.

Environmental Considerations

Solid wood is a natural material that responds to its environment. It expands and contracts with changes in humidity and temperature.

  • Humidity: Try to maintain a stable environment with a relative humidity between 35% and 55%. Extreme dryness can cause wood to shrink or crack, while high humidity can cause it to swell. Using a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer can help.
  • Sunlight: Avoid placing your furniture in direct, prolonged sunlight, as this can cause the finish and the wood color to fade or change unevenly. Cherry wood, in particular, will darken naturally with exposure to ambient light; this is a desirable quality, but direct sun can accelerate it dramatically.
  • Heat Sources: Do not place furniture directly next to radiators, heating vents, or fireplaces. The intense dry heat can cause significant damage to the wood and joints.

Protecting Surfaces

  • Use Coasters and Trivets: Always use coasters under glasses and trivets under hot dishes to protect the surface from moisture rings and heat damage.
  • Use Protective Pads: Place felt pads on the bottom of lamps, vases, and other decorative objects to prevent scratching the finish.
  • Writing Surfaces: When writing on a wooden surface, use a desk pad or blotter to prevent indentations.

Long-Term Maintenance

Over time, a hand-rubbed finish may begin to look dry or dull in high-wear areas. Rejuvenating the finish is a simple process.

  • Re-oiling: Depending on use and environment, your piece may benefit from a new coat of finishing oil every few years. We recommend a high-quality Tung oil or a specialized furniture wax. Always test in an inconspicuous area first. Apply a thin coat with a clean cloth, let it penetrate for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off all excess thoroughly with a new, clean cloth until the surface feels dry.
